How SaaS & AI Are Changing Software Licensing | Paul McClelland
About
Overview
Software licensing has changed dramatically over the past 10 to 15 years — and the rise of SaaS, cloud computing and artificial intelligence is making it even more complex.
In this short interview, Paul McClelland, Head of Legal at IPOS International, shares how the software licensing landscape is evolving.
From traditional software licences to increasingly sophisticated SaaS arrangements, businesses today are dealing with more:
usage restrictions and customised licensing terms;
cloud-based software and computing arrangements;
complex intellectual property considerations; and
emerging questions around AI data licensing and model licensing.
As AI increasingly relies on cloud infrastructure and large datasets, questions around who can use data, how AI models may be licensed, and what rights attach to those arrangements are becoming increasingly important.
Paul also highlights how developments in the UK and US courts may provide greater clarity on some of the fundamental legal questions surrounding AI, data and model training.
This interview was recorded alongside Tax Academy of Singapore's session on Practical IP and Tax Considerations for Software Licensing Agreements, featuring insights from Paul McClelland of IPOS International and Richard Goh, Group Tax Specialist at the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS).
